Conference aims to empower women

TO celebrate National Women's Day, a group of friends are planning to change the lives of Nelson Mandela Bay women through their women connect empowerment conference.

The conference starts today and runs until Sunday at the Red Location Lodge in New Brighton.

One of the organisers, Nandi Damane, 29, said they had invited different guest speakers who would talk about anything from marriage to ways that can help with women's empowerment in the Bay.

"We have always had get-togethers as friends so this time we have decided to do something different, something that will help empower others – whether it be in their marriages or their love lives. We will kick-start the weekend with a gala dinner," Damane said.

The idea emerged last year when a group of 50 friends, including their partners, met in Worcester for their annual get-together.

"We decided to include other people and do something that will benefit our communities. We have invited KQfm's Lungiswa Menze, who presents a women's magazine programme, Lwando Bantom, a chairman for the couples fellowship, Vidah Mayana, who has vast experience on issues affecting women, and others."

There will also be entertainment and prizes to be won. – Yoliswa Sobuwa
