THE Boardwalk Amphitheatre will resound with the soul-uplifting sound of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Choir in two special shows tonight and tomorrow before they embark on their international tour.

The NMMU Choir shows are being staged to help raise funds for the choir's trip to China where they will participate in the 12th China International Chorus Festival.

All profits from the ticket sales will be donated to the choir.

"We encourage our community to come down and support the NMMU Choir before they travel overseas to represent South Africa.

"Audiences are in for a very special treat as the choir takes them on an inspiring meander of Western and African repertoires," Babalwa Soga, retail promotions coordinator at the Boardwalk, said.

"These shows are a fitting send-off for the choir and a not-to-be-missed opportunity for local music-lovers to get a taste of what they have in store for the international choral festival." The NMMU Choir comprises 55 members, both students and alumni, who come from different walks of life.

The choir prides itself in being multicultural in both membership and the music it performs.

Since its inception in 1994, the choir has gained a reputation for its unique ability to successfully interpret both Western and African repertoire and has since become sought- after at choral festivals internationally.

This is the second time that the choir will be representing South Africa at the China International Choral Festival.

In 2012, the choir was selected to represent the country at the 11th annual festival and at the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM) World Choral Summit in Beijing.

The choir performed at the festival's opening ceremony in front of a crowd of 18000 people.

The Boardwalk, along with some of its tenants, has rallied to support the choir in covering the costs of travelling to this year's festival.

It is sponsoring the venue for the fundraising shows, and also donated R5000 to the choir to match the R5000 donated by Red Rock Spur.

Spur's head office has also hopped on board, sponsoring R10000.

Tickets to the NMMU Choir Show cost R100 or R150 per person and are available at the retail management office and at Red Rock Spur. R150 tickets include a meal, a cool drink, a cocktail and a game of tenpin bowling.

Participating outlets include Red Rock Spur, Wimpy, El Greco, News Café, Cone Zone and Wakaberry.
