Suzuki moving along Swift-ly with 1.2 range

SUZUKI Auto South Africa is one of those motoring companies who are quietly going about their business and raking in the customers.

The World of Wheels recently had two of the models on test – the Swift 1.4i GLS MT (R188900) and the 1.2i GL MT Dzire (R136900) – both very good value for money and ideal for urban driving conditions.

My favourite was the cheaper 1.2i GL MT Dzire which fits the bill for affordable driving without compromising any safety or comfort features.

The Swift 1.2 augments the Swift range, and is available with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions, and in two specification levels.

The interior of the 1.2 models retains the fresh, spacious ambience that has become synonymous with the Swift range.

The four-door layout allows convenient access to front and rear seats, while the ergonomic design favours intuitive interaction with the car's controls and switch gear.

The fascia is finished in black, while the steering wheel is tilt-adjustable.

The instrument binnacle is flanked by a centre stack containing the ventilation and air-conditioning controls, as well as the sound system in the case of the GL version.

The finishes and materials continue the Swift's reputation for quality and durability, while access to the 210-litre luggage compartment is convenient, thanks to the large-opening tailgate. The rear seat back can also be folded down to expand the Swift's cargo carrying capacity to a generous 533 litres.

Interior stowage options include a useful recess above the glove compartment and door pockets front and rear.

In addition, the cabin provides five fixed beverage holders.

The big news is the introduction of Suzuki's latest-generation K12-series 1.2-litre engine. The four-cylinder, 16-valve design employs electronic fuel injection and VVT variable valve timing to achieve optimum efficiency and performance.

The new engine has a rated maximum power output of 63kW at 6000rpm, linked to torque peak of 113Nm at 4500rpm. The variable valve timing optimises torque and power across the rev range in the interests of optimum response.

As in all Swift models, drive is to the front wheels, with a choice of transmissions. GA models are only offered with a five-speed manual gearbox, while GL derivatives can also be ordered with an optional four-speed automatic transmission.

The recommended retail prices include a two-year/30000km service plan and a three-year/100 000km warranty, while a three-year/unlimited distance roadside assistance package is also provided as part of the deal. Services are at 15000km intervals.

If you are looking for a new car, that's affordable and fun to drive, then look at Suzuki's new 1.2 range. You will not be disappointed. - Bobby Cheetham
