Eat your heart out – St Francis a food delight

FROM French and Italian to seafood and Greek there are a number of good options for dining out in St Francis.

But be warned, phoning ahead is worthwhile, as some establishments are not open every night.

After a braai on Friday night and a breakfast, including bacon and sausages on Saturday, my husband and I decided on seafood for dinner.

Having heard only good things about Chokka Block, a restaurant overlooking the harbour at Port St Francis, we headed out on a chilly night. A little fire was roaring when we arrived and, fortified with a glass of wine, we warmed up rather quickly. There is something quaint and unpretentious about Chokka Block and the menu follows this trend – it has all the seafood basics as well some catches of the day and few meat options.

We decided on the seafood platter for two. Generous portions of calamari and hake were complemented by mussels and some of the tastiest prawns I have had in a while. .

Served with chips the platter, which cost R274, was more than sufficient for two. The chips deserve a mention as they reminded me of my childhood when good old-fashioned peeled-in-the- -kitchen potato chips were the order of the day. We decided against dessert as the meal was more than generous in size.

Next time we are in the area we plan on trying Big Time Taverna, Bijou or Trattoria San Francesco – all of which were highly recommended.
