Algoa, Umhlobo Wenene fly province's flag

EASTERN Cape radio stations Umhlobo Wenene FM and Algoa FM will represent the province at the MTN Radio Awards in Johannesburg next month.

Umhlobo Wenene is nominated in 11 categories and Algoa FM in three.

"This is a big achievement for the station. Last year we had a listenership of more than 300000. On top of that we won 10 awards. These nominations are a continuation of where we left off. It means there is something right that the station is doing to satisfy its listeners," Umhlobo Wenene programme manager Phumzile Nteyi said.

Algoa FM's Daron Mann and Wayne Hart will defend their titles in the Best Breakfast Show/Presenter and Best Music Show in Commercial Radio categories.

Algoa FM operations director Alfie Jay said they were delighted with the nominations. "What it means for the team is that their passionate efforts have been recognised to be among the best in the country," Jay said.

MTN Radio Awards chief executive officer Lance Rothschild said: "One of the things that has been noticed and even commented on by the various adjudicators is the standard of radio in South Africa, which is excellent and most certainly on par with some of the best radio elsewhere in the world."

The winners will be announced at the MTN Radio Awards gala banquet at the Sandton Convention Centre on April 12. - Yoliswa Sobuwa
