Talk on music and kids with special needs

PORT Elizabeth music therapist Christine Joubert will give a seminar explaining how music therapy can help children with special needs at a seminar on Saturday morning in South End. Presented by Autism Eastern Cape, the free seminar will be held at Quest School for Autistic Learners in South End from 10 to 11am on Saturday.

Double masters graduate Joubert has qualified with a M Mus in music therapy and a MA in human movement therapy, and is a registered music therapist with the HPCSA.

She worked in Sweden, South Korea, Malaysia and Argentina as a therapist, educator and biokineticist before returning to the Eastern Cape to set up her music therapy practice.

Although the talk is presented under the auspices of Autism Eastern Cape, Joubert invites anyone with an interest in education to the session as she believes music therapy can assist children in several ways, including:

• Speech and communication
• Motor and sensory skills
• Behavioural and emotional issues
• Self-confidence
• Self-expression

It offers a creative way of communication through singing, playing an instrument, improvisation, song-writing, movement, group activities, musical stories and expressive arts.
