Once-pristine river drowning in squalor

The picture above is taken from the Niven bridge across the Swartkops River in Uitenhage. It shows the appalling squalor in our once-pristine river.

There is something radically wrong with our drainage infrastructure and waste management systems that wherever one goes in Nelson Mandela Bay, one is confronted with squalor.

We are drowning in squalor, except in suburbs like Summerstrand in PE and Vanes Estate in Uitenhage.

The global threat to our ecosystem is so serious that Pope Francis, in a recent benediction, drew attention to the threat to our ecosystems and beseeched communities to focus on solutions because the future of Mother Earth is at stake.

Let’s take this to heart.

We owe it to future generations.
