Tow trucks dodge law

DRIVING at break-neck speeds of up to 186km/h in suburban streets where the speed limit is 60km/h, Nelson Mandela Bay tow-truck drivers have been dodging the law for years, racking up hundreds of unpaid speeding fines.

Nelson Mandela traffic officials have spoken out in frustration that tow-truck drivers and the owners of the vehicles flagrantly flout speeding laws in pursuit of profit.

These shocking revelations have come to light just two weeks after it was reported in a council meeting that the traffic department collected only R1.8-million in revenue from fines between July and December last year, falling far short of its target by a whopping R14.3-million.
