A farming family from Steytlerville received top honours when they were recognised by an international men’s fashion brand.
The Alfred Dunhill award is presented yearly for the best summer kid mohair from a Cambedoo mohair producer in South Africa.
Camdeboo Mohair managing director Paul Michau, who presented the award on behalf of the exclusive men’s brand, said the company showed its appreciation for the Cambedoo quality by awarding the top producer annually.
The Camdeboo Mohair producers were judged on the samples delivered throughout the 2014 summer clip season, and Ray Hobson from Steytlerville, along with his son Gary and daughter Donna, came out tops with the best quality mohair produced on their farm, Baroe.
“Their goats are very hardy and sought after by other mohair breeders,” Michau said.
Ray Hobson said the family was particularly proud of the Thorn Park Angora studs, bred at their farm. “We do a lot of extra work and our animals have top quality genetics,” he said.
Gary and Donna are fifth generation mohair farmers and it is the first time the family has received this award, although they have won other mohair awards over the years.
