Life as we know it is set to change with the implementation of the Protection of Personal Information (Popi) Act, Dr Peter Tobin says.
Affecting anything from CCTV cameras, sign-in registers, document shredding and social networking to electronic direct marketing, personal information will have to be protected in a more vigorous manner when the new law comes into full affect.
The act was signed into law in late 2013 and partially came into force last year, with full commencement due this year.
Presenting a workshop at the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber yesterday, Popi Solutions and Services expert Tobin said compliance for businesses was important, as offenders could be penalised with fines of up to R10-million or 10 years in prison for serious data breaches.
