The number of liquidated companies fell last year compared with 2013‚ Statistics SA data showed yesterday.
The number of liquidations fell to 2 064 last year from 2 374 – representing a 13.1% decline.
Liquidations also decreased by 14% to 123 in December compared with a year previously.
Liquidations and insolvencies data measure economic performance and are also an important indicator of the scope of unpaid debt in South Africa.
Weak economic growth and strikes have weighed on companies.
The largest year-on-year decreases in total liquidations last year related to businesses in the wholesale and retail trade‚ and catering and accommodation which recorded 185 fewer liquidations – from 647 to 462.
