The Eastern Cape government has yet to decide how to fund the multimillion-rand revamp of the Addo Road which is costing the citrus industry massive financial losses.
During a visit with 10 ministers last April, President Jacob Zuma committed the government to fixing the road which is the main link for exports between the Kirkwood/Addo citrus industry – the second biggest contributor to the region’s economy – and Port Elizabeth.
This followed a campaign by the industry to get the road fixed as citrus transported on the road is often damaged due to the potholes. However, only surface maintenance – filling of potholes – has occurred.
Yesterday, Roads MEC Thandiswa Marawu’s chief of staff Zamile Kupe said the MEC was still committed to upgrading the road.
