Premier Food’s Blue Ribbon bakery delivery drivers and salesmen in Nelson Mandela Bay downed tools yesterday in protest against low wages, long hours and unpaid leave, lack of safety and insurance and general unfair labour practices.

Delivery of bread to various parts of the city almost ground to a halt as workers picketed outside the Walmer bakery – formerly The Star bakery – in the early hours.

Drivers and their assistants refused to drop off bread until management addressed their concerns, which they said had previously been raised with the sales manager and general manager.

The protesting workers, from Blue Ribbon’s sales and distribution department, are demanding to be made permanent and not be contracted through agents.
