Transported goods increased: Stats SA

The volume of freight transported goods increased by 7.5 percent in September 2014, compared with September last year, Statistics SA (Stats SA) said on Monday (17/11/2014).

The income for the corresponding time, increased by 12.3 percent over the same period, Stats SA said in its preliminary land transport survey.

Income from freight transportation increased by 9.5 percent in the third quarter of 2014 compared with the third quarter of 2013.

The main contributors to this increase were primary mining and quarrying products and agriculture and forestry primary products.

Stats SA said the number of passenger journeys increased by three percent in September 2014, compared with September 2013.

"The corresponding income increased by 12.4 percent over the same period."

The survey was based on a sample drawn from the 2014 business sampling frame that contained businesses registered for value added tax (VAT) and income tax. - Sapa
