Companies must protect privacy

COMPANIES will face potential multimillion-rand fines‚ civil claims and reputational damage unless they upgrade information technology (IT) security systems ahead of the implementation of new privacy laws.

Grant Thornton IT advisory director Michiel Jonker said this week the new Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act was going to force organisations to change their attitude towards IT security. South Africans would become hostile towards organisations that did not treat personal data principles with respect‚ he said.

The POPI Act‚ which is awaiting an implementation date‚ requires widespread reforms that the private and public sector must introduce to ensure personal information and data they collect areprotected. – I-Net
