IT has been a dream season for mohair sales in Port Elizabeth.

That is how Cape Mohair and Wool (CMW) summed up the past few months, with CMW general manager for mohair Pierre van der Vyver saying Billy and Fred Colborne, of Willowmore, stood out as having registered some record achievements.

"Not only did they collect the highest individual price ever of R850.50/kg for a bale of kid mohair, they went on to rewrite the world records for both young goat and adult mohair.

"To top it all, they set a new record for their total EGT [every goat tested] clip average at R338.59/kg – the first time ever that a clip average has broken through the elusive R300/kg barrier. The highest price was paid by the buyers' house of MWT which procured it for Italian client Safil," Van der Vyver said.

A bale of kid mohair from the farm of Piet Viljoen, of Kleinpoort, fetched R850/kg and qualified for the Ermenegildo Zegna international award. The Stucken Company was the buyer.

Van der Vyver said all types of mohair were in demand this season.

"Should one consider real averages at CMW, the summer season ended a magnificent 45.83% up from last year and as much as 88.62% better than the 2012 season," he said.

Mohair SA also reported that the summer season ended on a high, with the average market indicator gaining 5.8% at the final sale this week.

The market indicator closed on R177.44/kg, with 99% of the total offering of 121379kg being sold.

Mohair SA spokeswoman Robyn Rutters said the offering consisted of some excellent individual clips, with good quality hair on offer in general.

"It has been an exceptional season, with very good quality and strong demand across all sectors of the clip. The market closed 34% higher than the opening sale of the 2014 summer season and 51% higher than the corresponding sale of 2013," Rutters said.

A highest price of R850.50/kg was paid for a bale of super style 24 micron kid mohair, which was the top price this season.

The average market indicator for the season closed on R154.82.

This was 37% higher than the 2013 summer season.

Compared to the previous sale, prices at the Mohair SA sale were: kids up 8%, young goats up 4.7%, fine adults up 8.5%, strong adults up 4.8%, and average up 5.8%.

Winter mohair sales are scheduled to start in August. - Business Reporter
