DON Marco in Port Elizabeth has been synonymous with style for 30 years. Just like the quote by Yves Saint Laurent on her website, “Fashion fades but style is eternal”, so has business owner Donieta Herr continued to keep her well-known PE boutique an enduring part of the city’s fashion landscape.
Selling all the top international and national brands, one can find anything from an Errol Arendz jacket to a Polo handbag and Prada sunglasses at her two glamorous boutiques in the Walmer Park and Greenacres shopping centres. Don Marco also offers online shopping via the business’s website.
Herr started her business in 1984, when she bought Cloud 9 Boutique in Traduna Mall but later opened a second business, Don Marco, which she consolidated as one business.
“I have always loved fashion. From a very young age I would spend my pocket money at Cloud 9. I always dreamed of owning my own boutique one day. I bought Cloud 9 after school with a loan from the bank,” Herr said.
Today the stores stock top-end South African brands, as well as imported goods from all over the world, predominantly from Europe and Canada, which Herr hand-picks carefully.
“Every client who walks through our doors is a potential client. We mostly cater for ladies who aspire to sophistication and elegance, and gentlemen who like quality and a high-end product. We stock a wide range of apparel and accessories, including sports wear, formal wear, shoes and evening wear.
“We also stock Gant and Pringle for men. We have something for everyone,” Herr said.
Her plans for the future are “to bring even better fashion” to the doorstep of her PE clients and to ultimately become an importer.
The intrepid businesswoman also plans to expand Don Marco’s own in-house labels.
“My family is very supportive of my involvement in my business. I have dedicated my working life to building Cloud 9 and Don Marco along with my team in PE.
“I consider my team to be part of my family and we share one vision,” Herr said. – Cindy Preller
