New plan for more electricity

A PROCUREMENT process for 2500 megawatts of additional coalgenerated electricity capacity will begin next month, Energy Minister Ben Martins has announced.

It is likely to involve new baseload and cogeneration independent power producer (IPP) projects, observers say.

The country has been on tight power supply since before the 2008 blackouts that stripped billions of rands from the economy.

A multibillion-rand electricity capacity expansion programme is already under way.

The announcement yesterday followed a "fruitful" meeting between Martins and IPPs on Friday. – BDLive and Reuters
