Tourist industry income up 8.3%

INCOME for South Africa's tourist accommodation industry – which includes restaurant and bar sales and "other" income – rose by 8.3% year-on-year (y/y) in August‚ Statistics SA's tourist accommodation survey released yesterday showed.

The survey is conducted monthly and covers a sample of public and private enterprises involved in the short-stay accommodation industry.

Stats SA said total income from accommodation increased by 11.9% y/y in August‚ the result of a 5.5% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 6.1% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

The survey describes a stay unit as a unit of accommodation available to be rented out to guests.

Examples include a powered site in a caravan park or a hotel room. – BDpro
