GENERAL Motors South Africa (GMSA) has received seven awards – five in first place – in the 2013 Ipsos Quality Awards.
Isuzu continued its dominance of the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment, while Chevrolet was one of three top performing passenger car brands, with first place in two segments and four second places.
The Ipsos (previously Synovate) awards are considered the benchmark for measuring customers’ purchase and after-sales experience. In the largest survey of its kind in South Africa, Ipsos annually interviews 10000 new vehicle owners three months after their purchase on any problems they have experienced and produces a score of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100).
GMSA quality manager Andy Alexander said the achievements of the locally manufactured Chevrolet Spark and Isuzu KB models indicated the success of the company’s R1-billion investment in facilities to build these products at the Port Elizabeth plant.
The Isuzu KB repeated its class- leading history, once again being named the overall best one-ton single cab LCV and dominated all but one of the one-ton LCV segments, taking top honours for petrol and diesel single cabs, and petrol double cab.
Ipsos automotive business unit director Patrick Busschau said: “There is no clear dominance by one brand across the categories.
“This is great for the automotive industry and reintroduces some new competition. Some of the other brands have caught up to the traditional benchmarks in product quality and this bodes well for the industry as well as the consumer.”
The overall average across the passenger vehicles had decreased slightly from 2012, from 41 PP100 to 39 PP100.
“Although not a significant drop, it is an indication of the ongoing improvement trend from previous years.”
The top performer in the entry segment for passenger vehicles went to the VW Polo Vivo Sedan. The Polo Vivo Hatch, Chevrolet Spark and Chevrolet Spark Lite, and Toyota Yaris 1 L were tied in second place. In third place were the Nissan Micra, Renault Sandero and Toyota Aygo.
In the LCV segment for three- quarter ton vehicles, the Nissan NP200 features at the top. The Chevrolet Utility is in second place. Isuzu KB dominates all but one of the rest of the segments except for the deisel double cab segment, which was won by the Toyota Hilux.
